The goal of the Program is for students to acquire advanced knowledge of biochemical principles that underlie how cells function in both the normal and diseased states. Because these principles form the basis for research into all cellular processes, the knowledge gained by our students through coursework and thesis research prepares them to enter careers in biomedical research in any research specialty or research setting.

The Program in Biochemistry offers a wide variety of research opportunities including investigation of:
structure-based drug design based on nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis
  mechanism of anthrax toxin action using X-Ray crystallography  
  molecular basis of cancer: 1) oncogenic proteins such as receptors, GTPases, tyrosine kinases, and lipid kinases and 2) tumor suppressor genes  
  pathophysiology of inflammatory disorders mediated by mast cells  
  molecular basis of auto-immune diseases like lupus: disease-associated anti-DNA antibodies  
  thrombosis associated with heart disease through the study of cell surface protease activated receptors  
  corneal disease through the study of the galectin protein family  
  molecular basis of gene function including DNA replication, regulation of RNA transcription and RNA processing  

Graduates of our program go on to successful careers in research and teaching in universities, professional schools, and government labs; biotechnology industry research and management; communications; and biotechnology patent law.
