MSTP Program

The Sackler School, in conjunction with the Tufts University School of Medicine, offers the opportunity for qualified individuals to pursue a combined M.D./Ph.D. degree.

The M.D./Ph.D. program is designed for students who want to pursue careers that include both research and clinical practice. Students receive rigorous scientific training in addition to full academic and clinical training in the practice of medicine. This training program enables students to bridge the disparate cultures of scientific investigation and clinical medicine. Our highly qualified students have strong undergraduate preparation in science and significant research experience. This program is supported by a Medical Scientist Training Program grant from the National Institutes of Health. All students receive full tuition scholarships and generous stipends throughout their training.

Students usually complete requirements for both degrees in eight years. Students often begin the program with a research rotation in the laboratory of a Sackler School faculty member during the summer prior to entering the medical school. During the first two years of the program, students complete the first- and second-year medical school curriculum and two to three laboratory rotations. They also attend monthly meetings and an annual faculty/student retreat. Students devote the following three to four years conducting research in the laboratory of a faculty sponsor. The final two years are primarily devoted to clinical training. Both degrees are granted simultaneously at the end of the final clinical year.We invite you to visit our MSTP web site to learn more about our program.
